The Barry Sheene Festival of Speed is coming up, and with that brings to Australia some of the motor racing’s legends. In celebration of this, Sydney Café Racers invited some of these racing legends along for a ride through Sydney to show them some of the sites along with some of Sydney’s best custom bikes.

The Barry Sheene Festival Of Speed is an annual celebration of bikes, the riders, and the history behind both. The annual meeting was renamed in recognition of Barry Sheene after his passing in 2003. The charismatic and colourful racing legend that is Barry Sheene won 23 Grand Prix races with 52 podium finishes over his career, and was a modern sports superstar. Joining SCR tonight would be Kevin Schwantz (500cc World Champ 1993), Freddie Spencer (250/ 500 cc World Champ 1993/ 1985), Jeremy McWilliams (250cc GP winner 2001), and the gorgeous Maria Costello (Isle of Mann / Manx GP rider). All of which would be riding their own custom styled SCR appropriate bikes for the evening. After some photos and signatures, it was time to hit the road.

There was a fantastic representation from Sydney’s custom and classic bike scene as over 100 bikes turned up for the ride. The racing legends rubbed shoulders with riders and builders from throughout Sydney, and it was a very exciting atmosphere. After meeting at Sydney Café Racer’s usual meeting spot, Harry’s Café De Wheels Tempe, the group gave out its usual ride briefing and before long the roaring mix of bikes was off to the first regathering at La Perouse.

After a quick stop at La Perouse, the group set off up the coast, through the twisting streets to have a final regroup at Bondi, before heading to Harry’s at Woolloomooloo for a feed and final rest before everyone departed on their own separate ways home.
